Manuscript Editing + Consultation

You care deeply about your work. You want to ensure that you’re communicating your research and ideas clearly, effectively, and elegantly. You want to engage your readers and make an impact within and beyond your field.

I understand the nature, expectations, and idiosyncrasies of academic writing and creative work, as well as the desire to express yourself and communicate knowledge and ideas in meaningful ways.

As an editor, I meet your manuscript on its own terms, taking into full consideration a myriad of factors that include your vision and voice, the reader’s experience, nuances of word choice and meaning, expectations of your field, the appropriate style guide (e.g., CMS, APA, MLA), and university or press specifications.

I consider content, structure, tone, grammar, syntax, formatting, and more, for coherence, flow, accuracy, and artistry. I’m thorough and detailed, and I make editorial changes and suggestions to polish your writing while honoring your style, voice, and perspective.

Types of projects in which I specialize include:

  • Books

  • Dissertations, treatises, theses

  • Journal articles

  • Grant proposals

  • Conference papers & recital presentations

  • Application essays & teaching statements

I also have expertise in editing and formatting citations and references, tables and figures, music score examples, front and back matter, and other elements of the manuscript. I provide proofreading services as the final step in the process, after a client has made revisions based on the editing markup.

Pricing:

Since projects vary in length, complexity, and editing needs, costs also vary. I’d be delighted to provide you with an estimate.

Next steps:

It’s easy to submit an inquiry. Click the button below to book a free initial consultation. In the booking form, please answer a few questions about your project so we can make the most of our conversation. This initial call is a valuable part of the process. We discuss your project details, objectives, concerns, and timeline, as well as the scope of work and estimated cost. If we determine if we’re a good fit to work together, we create a strategy for moving forward. Otherwise I can make recommendations or point you to additional resources.

If you’re looking to refine and polish your manuscript so you can send it out into the world with confidence, let’s work together!

My book had been stuck in the academic doldrums for the better part of a decade, and Amy provided the tailwind I needed to get the project across the finish line. It is no exaggeration to say that Amy’s feedback helped me regain my enthusiasm for my project and indeed for my own writing. This is my first time hiring an editor, and I have been comforted throughout this process by Dr. Bradley’s professionalism—which, as I have learned, includes not only reliability and academic bandwidth, but also emotional intelligence. For a project that has been so personal, so challenging, for so long, I needed someone who could deliver constructive criticism in a tactful way, and Amy delivered here, big time, while also helping me stay on schedule. For threading the needle of professional expectations with a caring, personal touch, Amy has earned my highest praise.

Amy is an invaluable second pair of eyes and ears, a scrupulous editor, and an imaginative problem solver. I would not have made my deadlines without her.
— DR. DENISE VON GLAHN, PROFESSOR OF MUSICOLOGY, AUTHOR OF CIRCLE OF WINNERS

FAQs

  • We begin with an initial consultation to discuss your project, vision, and timeline. I review a sample of your writing and provide an estimate of time and cost based on the scope of work. Once we have an agreement in place, I work through your manuscript systematically, suggesting edits and making annotations in the document using Track Changes and Comments.

Check–in and follow-up consultations are built into the process at strategic points, depending on the nature of the project. These allow us to address any questions and even put our brains together on sections that need clarification.

I apply my editorial skills and invest in your project as if it were my own. I help you produce the best version of your work and prepare it for publication or presentation.

  • If you have a rush job, I am happy to work with you if my schedule permits. An additional fee or rush rate will be applied for expedited services.

  • Given the level of expertise, value, and commitment I provide to my clients and their projects, as well as the consultation and communication process we maintain, I do not provide free sample edits.
